Maa Katyayani rides a lion and has four arms, holding a sword and a lotus, with the other two hands in the gestures of fearlessness and blessing.
Maa Katyayani Katha
Sage Katyayana performed long penance hoping the Goddess would be born as his daughter. When the demon Mahishasura began terrorising the gods, the combined energy of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva took form in the sage's ashram as the Goddess, who became known as Katyayani.
It is this form that fought and slew Mahishasura, earning the name Mahishasura Mardini.
The Bhagavata Purana tells how the gopis of Braj worshipped Katyayani for a whole month, praying for Krishna as their husband. Unmarried girls still pray to her for a good life partner.

Day 6 Puja Vidhi
- Wake early, bathe and wear green if you can.
- Worship the kalash and light the lamp (or tend the Akhand Jyoti).
- Place a picture of Maa Katyayani and offer roli, akshat and red roses.
- Offer the bhog: honey.
- Chant "Om Devi Katyayanyai Namah" 108 times, then recite the stuti above.
- Read the Durga Chalisa or a chapter of the Durga Saptashati.
- End with the Jai Ambe Gauri aarti and share the prasad.
