What is an aarti?
An aarti is a Hindu ritual of worship in which light from a wick soaked in ghee or camphor is offered to a deity. The devotional song sung during that offering is also called an aarti. It is usually performed at dawn and dusk, and at the close of a puja.
What is the difference between an aarti and a chalisa?
A chalisa is a devotional hymn of forty verses, from the Hindi word chalis meaning forty. An aarti is shorter and tied to the lamp-offering ritual, while a chalisa is a longer standalone hymn of praise that can be recited at any time.
How many verses does the Hanuman Chalisa have?
The Hanuman Chalisa has 40 chaupais (verses), framed by two opening dohas and one closing doha. It was composed by the poet-saint Tulsidas in the 16th century in the Awadhi language.
What is panchang?
Panchang is the Hindu almanac used to determine auspicious timings. Its five limbs are tithi (lunar day), vara (weekday), nakshatra (lunar mansion), yoga and karana.
Which aarti is sung in the evening?
Om Jai Jagdish Hare is the most widely sung evening aarti across India and is offered to Lord Vishnu. Households also commonly sing the aarti of their chosen deity, such as Sukhkarta Dukhharta for Ganesha or Om Jai Shiv Omkara for Shiva.
Is Hindu Aarti free to use?
Yes. Every aarti, chalisa, mantra, stotram and bhajan on Hindu Aarti is free to read, with no login or subscription. All texts are traditional works in the public domain, shown in both Devanagari and English transliteration.
