Form of Maa Kushmanda
Maa Kushmanda has eight arms (Ashtabhuja Devi), holding a kamandalu, bow, arrow, lotus, a pot of nectar, chakra, mace and a rosary. She rides a lion.
Maa Kushmanda Katha
Before creation there was only darkness. Maa Kushmanda smiled, and from the warmth of that smile the cosmic egg (brahmanda) was born, and with it the whole universe. Her name comes from ku (a little), ushma (warmth) and anda (the cosmic egg).
She is the only Goddess said to dwell in the core of the Sun, and it is her radiance that gives the Sun its light.
Offerings of kushmanda (ash gourd / pumpkin) are especially dear to her.

Day 4 Puja Vidhi
- Wake early, bathe and wear royal blue if you can.
- Worship the kalash and light the lamp (or tend the Akhand Jyoti).
- Place a picture of Maa Kushmanda and offer roli, akshat and red or yellow flowers.
- Offer the bhog: malpua.
- Chant "Om Devi Kushmandayai Namah" 108 times, then recite the stuti above.
- Read the Durga Chalisa or a chapter of the Durga Saptashati.
- End with the Jai Ambe Gauri aarti and share the prasad.
