On the advice of Devarshi Narada, Parvati resolved to win Lord Shiva as her husband through tapasya (penance). For thousands of years she lived on fruits and roots, then only on fallen bilva leaves, and finally gave up even those.
Because she gave up even leaves (parna) she became known as Aparna. Her austerity shook the three worlds, and the gods and sages praised her. Brahma himself told her that her wish would be fulfilled and Shiva would accept her.
Brahmacharini means "one who walks the path of Brahman" - she stands for devotion carried out with complete discipline.

Day 2 Puja Vidhi
- Wake early, bathe and wear white if you can.
- Worship the kalash and light the lamp (or tend the Akhand Jyoti).
- Place a picture of Maa Brahmacharini and offer roli, akshat and white flowers such as jasmine.
- Offer the bhog: sugar or mishri, and fruits.
- Chant "Om Devi Brahmacharinyai Namah" 108 times, then recite the stuti above.
- Read the Durga Chalisa or a chapter of the Durga Saptashati.
- End with the Jai Ambe Gauri aarti and share the prasad.
