What is Rahu Kaal? (राहु काल क्या होता है?)
Rahu Kaal (राहु काल) is a period of approximately 90 minutes each day that is considered inauspicious in Vedic astrology. It is governed by Rahu — one of the nine celestial bodies (Navagraha) and a shadow planet known for creating confusion, delays, and obstacles.
During Rahu Kaal, Hindus traditionally avoid starting new ventures, signing important documents, travelling for the first time, performing auspicious ceremonies (shubh karya), or making major purchases. However, ongoing work and daily routine activities can continue without worry.
Note: Rahu Kaal does not affect the entire day — only a specific 90-minute window. The rest of the day remains perfectly fine for all activities.
How is Rahu Kaal Calculated?
The calculation is straightforward. The total daytime hours (from sunrise to sunset) are divided into 8 equal segments, each ruled by a different planet. The segment ruled by Rahu is the Rahu Kaal. Since sunrise and sunset times change with seasons and location, Rahu Kaal timings also shift slightly throughout the year.
Day-Wise Rahu Kaal Timings (General Guide)
The following table shows the approximate Rahu Kaal timings based on a standard 6:00 AM sunrise. Adjust according to your city's actual sunrise time.
| दिन (Day) | Rahu Kaal (Approx.) (Sunday) | 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM | 8th segment |
Tip: Remember the mnemonic sequence Mother Saw Father Wearing The Turban Slowly — the first letter of each word corresponds to the day order: Monday (1), Saturday (2), Friday (3), Wednesday (4), Thursday (5), Tuesday (6), Sunday (7) for the segment number.
What to Avoid During Rahu Kaal
- Do not start a new business or sign contracts
- Do not begin a journey for the first time
- Do not perform griha pravesh (housewarming) or mundan (head shaving ceremony)
- Do not buy expensive items like gold, property, or vehicles
- Do not schedule a wedding muhurat during this period
Remedies to Reduce Rahu's Negative Effects
- Chant the Rahu Beej Mantra: "ॐ भ्रां भ्रीं भ्रौं सः राहवे नमः" — Recite 108 times using a Sandalwood mala
- Worship Lord Hanuman: Rahu's influence is neutralised by Hanuman ji's grace. Recite the Hanuman Chalisa during Rahu Kaal for protection
- Donate: Offer black sesame seeds (til), mustard oil, or a dark blue cloth on Saturdays
- Wear a Hessonite (Gomed): After consulting a qualified astrologer, wearing a Gomed gemstone can pacify Rahu
- Light a sesame oil lamp: Place it under a Peepal tree on Saturday evening
Final Thought
Rahu Kaal is a guide, not a restriction. It helps you plan your important activities during the more auspicious hours of the day. Use it wisely to make better decisions, and combine it with sincere devotion to overcome any planetary challenges.
