Shiv Chalisa in Hindi & English — शिव चालीसा Lyrics, Benefits & Paath Vidhi

Introduction to Shiv Chalisa (शिव चालीसा)

The Shiv Chalisa (शिव चालीसा) is a devotional hymn of 40 verses dedicated to Lord Shiva — Mahadev, the Supreme Destroyer and Transformer in the Hindu Trinity. While the Hanuman Chalisa is attributed to Tulsidas, the Shiv Chalisa comes from a broader devotional tradition and is recited by millions of Shiva bhakts across India, especially during Shravan Maas (the holy month of Sawan) and on Pradosh Vrat days.

Reciting the Shiv Chalisa with devotion is believed to please Bholenath (the innocent Lord) quickly, as Shiva is known as Ashutosh — one who is easily pleased by sincere devotion.

When to Recite Shiv Chalisa

  • Shravan Somvar (Mondays in the month of Sawan) — Most auspicious
  • Pradosh Vrat — The evening twilight of the 13th tithi, sacred to Shiva
  • Maha Shivaratri — The great night of Shiva (February/March)
  • Daily — Every Monday evening or any time you wish to connect with Mahadev
