Purnima 2026 — All Full Moon Dates, Vrat Vidhi & Significance (पूर्णिमा 2026)

पूर्णिमा (Purnima) — the full moon day — holds immense spiritual significance in Hinduism. It is believed that on Purnima, the Moon is at its fullest radiance, and its positive energy directly influences the human mind and body. Observing Purnima Vrat (पूर्णिमा व्रत) is one of the most powerful and accessible fasts in the Hindu tradition.

Why is Purnima Sacred?

In Hindu philosophy, the Moon represents the mind (Manas). Just as the Moon reaches its full brilliance on Purnima, the human mind is believed to be at its most receptive and powerful on this day. This is why:

  • Lord Vishnu is especially worshipped on Purnima (it is Vishnu's tithi)
  • Satyanarayan Puja is traditionally performed on Purnima
  • Guru Purnima, Buddha Purnima, and Sharad Purnima are among the holiest days in Hinduism
  • Charitable acts (daan) performed on Purnima yield manifold spiritual merit

Purnima Vrat Vidhi (पूर्णिमा व्रत विधि)

Morning:

  1. Wake before sunrise and take a holy bath
  2. Take Sankalp (vow) to observe the Purnima Vrat
  3. Offer water (Arghya) to the rising Sun

During the Day: 4. Observe a fast — eat only fruits, milk, and sattvic food (no grains for strict observers) 5. Read Vishnu Sahasranama or Satyanarayan Katha 6. Chant "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" 108 times 7. Perform acts of charity — donate food, clothes, or money to the needy

Evening (Most Important): 8. After moonrise, offer Arghya (water mixed with rice, flowers, and kumkum) to the Moon 9. Perform Satyanarayan Aarti 10. Break the fast after sighting the Moon and offering Arghya

Special Purnima Observances

Sharad Purnima (October): This is considered the most auspicious Purnima of the year. On this night, the Moon is believed to shower Amrit (divine nectar). Devotees keep Kheer (rice pudding) under direct moonlight overnight and consume it the next morning for health and vitality.

Kartik Purnima (November): Considered equivalent to performing an Ashwamedha Yagya. Taking a holy dip before sunrise on Kartik Purnima washes away sins of many lifetimes. In Varanasi, lakhs of diyas are floated on the Ganga — known as Dev Deepawali.

Benefits of Purnima Vrat

  • Mental clarity and emotional balance (Moon governs the mind)
  • Vishnu's blessings for wealth, health, and family harmony
  • Removal of Chandra Dosha from the horoscope
  • Spiritual merit (Punya) equivalent to performing major yagyas
  • Improved relationships — the full Moon's energy promotes love and forgiveness

"पूर्णिमा के दिन किया गया दान, व्रत और पूजन करोड़ों गुना फल देता है।"
