Pradosh Vrat (प्रदोष व्रत), also known as Trayodashi Vrat, is a sacred Hindu fast observed on the 13th day (Trayodashi) of every lunar fortnight. Dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, this vrat falls twice each month — once during Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) and once during Krishna Paksha (waning moon). The twilight period on Trayodashi, known as Pradosh Kaal, is considered extremely auspicious for Shiva worship.
What is Pradosh Kaal?
Pradosh Kaal refers to the 2.5-hour window around sunset (roughly 1.5 hours before and 1 hour after sunset). Performing puja during this window on Trayodashi is believed to please Lord Shiva immensely and grant the devotee freedom from sins and worldly sorrows.

Pradosh Vrat Katha Summary (प्रदोष व्रत कथा)
The Pradosh Vrat Katha is rooted in the story of Samudra Manthan (समुद्र मंथन). When the Devas and Asuras churned the cosmic ocean, the deadly poison Halahal emerged, threatening to destroy all creation. Lord Shiva, out of compassion, consumed the poison and held it in his throat, turning it blue — earning him the name Neelkanth (नीलकंठ). The gods then worshipped Shiva during the Pradosh Kaal to express gratitude, and since then, this twilight worship on Trayodashi became the most sacred time for Shiva devotion.
