The Satyanarayan Puja is one of the most popular and widely performed pujas in Hindu households. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his form as "Satyanarayan" (the God of Truth), this puja can be performed by anyone, at any time, and does not require a priest.
When to Perform?
- Purnima (Full Moon Day) — Most auspicious
- On any auspicious occasion: new house, marriage, childbirth, new job, or business success
- When you feel gratitude or wish to seek divine blessings
Required Samagri (Materials)

Step-by-Step Vidhi (Procedure)
1. Sankalp (Intention Setting) Sit facing East or North. Sprinkle Ganga Jal on yourself. Take water in your right palm, state your name, gotra, and the purpose of the puja, then pour the water onto the thali.
2. Ganesh Puja Begin by invoking Lord Ganesha (the remover of obstacles) with the mantra: "Om Gan Ganapataye Namah"
3. Kalash Sthapana Fill the brass kalash with water, place mango leaves and coconut on top. The kalash represents Lord Vishnu's presence.
4. Main Puja Offer flowers, kumkum, haldi, and rice to the deity while chanting "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya"
5. Katha Paath (Reading the Stories) The five chapters of the Satyanarayan Katha must be read aloud. Each chapter illustrates the power of truth and devotion.
6. Aarti & Prasad Conclude with the Vishnu Aarti. Prepare sheera (semolina halwa) as prasad and distribute to all present.
Key Rules
- Never refuse the prasad — this is the moral of the 5th Katha
- The puja should ideally be performed in the evening
- All family members should participate and listen to the Katha
