The Gayatri Mantra — Mother of All Mantras
The Gayatri Mantra (गायत्री मंत्र) is the most revered and powerful mantra in all of Vedic literature. Found in the Rigveda (Mandala 3, Sukta 62, Verse 10), it is a 24-syllable hymn dedicated to Savitri (the divine Sun, the source of all life and consciousness). It is often called the "Mother of the Vedas" (Veda Mata) because its essence contains the wisdom of all four Vedas.

Rules for Chanting (जाप के नियम)
-
Best times (Sandhya Kaal): The three ideal times are Brahma Muhurat (4:00–6:00 AM), Madhyahna (12:00 noon), and Sayam Sandhya (sunset). Dawn is the most powerful time.
-
Direction: Sit facing East in the morning and North in the evening.
-
Posture: Sit in Padmasana or Sukhasana on a clean asan (mat). Keep the spine straight.
-
Mala (Rosary): Use a Rudraksha or Tulsi mala with 108 beads. Hold it in your right hand and use the middle finger and thumb to count.
-
Number of repetitions: Chant 108 times (one full mala) for standard practice. For intense sadhana, chant 3, 5, or 11 malas. A full Gayatri Purashcharana requires 24 lakh (2.4 million) repetitions.
-
Pronunciation: Pronounce each of the 24 syllables clearly. Speed is not important — clarity and devotion are.
-
Mental chanting: If you cannot chant aloud, mental chanting (manasik jaap) is equally powerful. The Manusmriti states that silent repetition is ten times more meritorious than loud chanting.
Who Can Chant the Gayatri Mantra?
Traditionally, the Gayatri Mantra was imparted during the Upanayana (sacred thread) ceremony. However, many modern spiritual leaders including Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo, and Pandit Shriram Sharma Acharya have affirmed that anyone — regardless of gender, caste, or age — can chant the Gayatri Mantra with devotion. The mantra belongs to all of humanity.
